Carbonization is when we take a material that comes from plants, like wood or coal, and heat it up with very little oxygen. This makes the material change into a black substance called carbon, which is a lot like the charcoal in your barbecue grill.
When making carbon, we heat up the plant material in a special oven, called a kiln. The kiln is a big, metal box that can get very hot. We put the plant material inside and heat it up slowly, making sure to keep the oxygen away. This is because if too much oxygen gets in, the plant material will just burn instead of turning into carbon.
Once the material has been heated up enough, any remaining gas and liquids are removed, leaving behind the black carbon. This carbon can then be used for lots of different things, like making pencils, car tires, and even some medicines.
So, carbonization is a way of turning plants into carbon by heating them up with little to no oxygen, and it can be used to make lots of useful things.
