Cartographic generalization

Cartographic generalization is a way to simplify maps so that the most important parts are kept but the details that aren't so important are removed. It makes it easier to read and understand the map. For example, if you were looking at a map of a city, the roads and the buildings might be simplified so that you could tell the biggest roads from the smaller roads and the tallest buildings from the smaller buildings.
