ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cascadia subduction zone

Imagine you are playing with blocks and you have one big block and a smaller block. Now, you try to slide the smaller block under the big block. This is kind of what happens at the Cascadia Subduction Zone. It's a place in the ocean where two big pieces of the earth's crust are sliding past each other.

One of the big pieces is called the Juan de Fuca Plate (just like you might have a plate for your food). The other big piece is called the North American Plate (like a big plate you might use to put all your food on at dinner). The Juan de Fuca Plate is going under the North American Plate, just like the smaller block you were playing with that went under the bigger one.

When this happens, it can cause earthquakes. The movement of the plates releases energy which creates sound waves that we hear as an earthquake. Sometimes these earthquakes can be really big and cause a lot of damage.

Now, the Cascadia Subduction Zone is special because it's where the two plates meet is close to where a lot of people live in the Pacific Northwest, like in Oregon and Washington. So if there is a really big earthquake there, it could cause a lot of damage to buildings, bridges, and roads. Scientists study the Cascadia Subduction Zone to try to understand more about earthquakes and make sure people stay safe.
