Casemate

Casemates are spaces inside a fort or castle which are for soldiers to defend themselves against attackers. They are strong, thick walls made of stone or brick that can keep people safe from things like cannons and arrows. They often have small windows so soldiers can see out, and normally have a door that can be closed to protect against attacks.
