ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cataloging

Cataloging is when people take things and write down what they are, what they look like, and where they belong. It's like making a list of toys you have in your toy box, except it's for bigger things like books in a library or paintings in a museum.

For example, let's say you have a library with lots of books. You want to make sure people can find the book they want when they come to the library. So, you need to write down some important information about each book like the name of the book, who wrote it, when it was published, and what kind of book it is.

Once you have all that information, you organize the books by putting them in order, usually alphabetically by the author's last name, and then give each book its own special place on a shelf. This way, people can come to the library and easily find the book they want to read, just by looking it up in the catalog.

Cataloging helps people keep track of all kinds of things and makes it easier for them to find what they are looking for.
