ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Champerty

Hello there! Today we'll be learning about a big word called "champerty" but don't worry, I will explain it to you as if you're 5 years old.

Champerty is a big word that means when someone helps another person with their lawsuit, but they only help because they want to make money from the lawsuit.

Imagine if your friend is in trouble and they need help from someone else to win their case. But instead of helping just to be kind, there is someone else who wants to help your friend, but only if they get some of the money that your friend gets for winning the case. This person is called a "champertous."

The problem with champerty is that it's not fair to the person who was wronged in the first place. The champertous is only interested in making money rather than helping to fix the situation.

That's why champerty is often illegal. It's important to help others because it's the right thing to do, not just because of the possibility of making money from it.
