ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Charon's obol

Imagine you're a very, very old person and you've lived a long and happy life. When you die, you go on a journey to a place called the underworld. This place is where all the souls go after they die. When you get there, you meet a ferryman called Charon who will take you across a river to get to the other side.

Charon is like a taxi driver who takes you from one side to the other, but he doesn't work for free. When you get to him, he wants a payment to take you across the river. This payment is called a Charon's obol.

An obol is like a coin that was used in Ancient Greece a long, long time ago. It was a small silver coin that was worth one-sixth of a drachma. In the underworld, Charon needs an obol to take you across the river to the other side. If you don't have one, then you can't cross the river and you will be stuck in the underworld forever.

So, it's very important to have a Charon's obol with you when you die. This will ensure that you can safely cross the river and make it to the other side. But don't worry, if you don't have one, there are some other ways to get across the river safely.
