ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chess glossary

A chess glossary is like a special book that teaches you all the special words and phrases you need to know when you play the game of chess. It's sort of like a cheat sheet, but it's not cheating because everyone can use it!

For example, there are special names for all the different chess pieces, like the king, queen, rook, bishop, knight, and pawn. There are also words like "check" and "checkmate" that tell you when your opponent is in trouble and can't move their pieces safely anymore.

The glossary also helps you understand more complicated rules, like "castling," which is when the king moves two spaces towards a rook and the rook moves to the other side of the king. It's sort of like the king is hiding behind the rook!

Some of the words in the glossary might seem hard to remember at first, but the more you play chess, the more familiar they will become. Soon you'll be a chess expert and will be using all those special words like a pro!
