ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chessboard

A chessboard is a square board, usually black and white, with 64 squares on it. It is divided into two halves with each half having 32 squares. There are eight horizontal rows of squares, which we call ranks, and eight vertical columns of squares, which we call files.

When a game of chess is played, each player has 16 pieces, which they use to move on the board. There are six different types of chess pieces: the king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, and pawn. Each piece moves in a different way and has a different value.

The ultimate goal of the game is to "checkmate" your opponent's king - this means putting their king in a position where it cannot escape capture. This can be accomplished through various pieces and moves, and the player who accomplishes it wins the game.

Chess is a long-standing game with a rich history, and it is known for helping to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
