Chilblains are like sad little boo-boos that happen on your fingers and toes when they get too cold.
You know how sometimes when you play outside in the snow without gloves or socks, your hands and feet turn red and hurt when you go back inside? That’s because when your body gets really cold, your blood vessels get smaller to try to keep you warm. But when they get small like that, sometimes they sort of forget how to be big again once you warm up.
That’s when chilblains happen. Your skin gets all irritated and pink and sometimes even blistered because your blood can’t flow through your little tiny blood vessels like it should. It’s like your fingers and toes are mad at you for not keeping them warm enough.
So, to avoid chilblains, always make sure you wear warm clothes and cozy socks and gloves when it’s really cold outside. And if you do get chilblains, don’t worry too much - they usually go away on their own within a week or two.
