ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chilean American

Let's pretend you have a friend named Juan. Juan was born in Chile, which is a country in South America. Juan's family moved to the United States, which is a different country that is much further north, and now they live there.

Juan is called a "Chilean American" because he is from Chile but also has American citizenship since he lives in the United States now. Just like how you might be called an "American" because you were born in the United States, Juan is both Chilean and American.

Even though Juan's family comes from a different country, they still celebrate Chilean holidays and traditions while also participating in American ones too. They might eat traditional Chilean foods like empanadas or listen to Chilean music, but also enjoy American things like hamburgers and pop music.

Being a Chilean American means that Juan gets to experience two different cultures and learn about their unique qualities. It's pretty cool to have two homes and get to be a part of two amazing cultures!
