China Airlines Flight 676

Imagine you are on a big airplane that takes you from one place to another. Just like a big car, this airplane has a person who drives it, and many passengers that sit inside.

In 1998, there was an airplane called China Airlines Flight 676 that was traveling from Bali, which is an island in Indonesia, to Taipei, which is the capital city of Taiwan. However, something went wrong when the airplane was preparing to land at the Taipei airport.

There are special instruments that help the airplane driver know how high above the ground it is. These instruments are called altimeters. But in this case, the altimeter on Flight 676 was not working correctly. It showed that the airplane was much higher than it actually was!

Because of this mistake, the airplane driver thought he had plenty of altitude to land, but in reality the plane was flying too low. The airplane hit some trees and houses before crashing into the ground.

Sadly, many people on board the airplane, as well as people on the ground, were hurt or killed. This was a big tragedy for everyone involved.

To prevent this from happening again, airplane manufacturers and airlines took steps to make sure that their altimeters were accurate and that airplane drivers had the proper training to avoid accidents like this.
