ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chromatic aberration

So kiddo, when we look through a magnifying glass or a camera lens, we expect everything to look perfect, right? But there’s a little problem called chromatic aberration that can mess things up a bit.

Let me explain it to you in simple terms. When light travels through a lens, it bends a little bit. But different colors of light bend different amounts. This means that not all the colors of light meet exactly at the same point, even though they were all trying to make a picture for us to see.

So, when we look at something with lots of colors, like your rainbow t-shirt, or a bright sign, we might see some fuzzy or colorful edges around the letters. This is because our lens or camera can’t focus all the different colors of light perfectly on the same point, which makes some colors appear slightly out of place or blurry.

This colorful fuzziness is called chromatic aberration. It happens in all kinds of lenses, like the ones in our eyes and the ones in cameras. But don’t worry, cameras and lenses have ways to correct for this problem, so we can still get amazing pictures of rainbows and colorful things.
