ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chronolect

Okay, kiddo, have you heard when people talk differently depending on where they come from or who they talk to? That's because they have different ways of speaking, and we call those ways of speaking dialects.

Now, imagine if we measured those different ways of speaking and figured out how they change over time, that would give us an idea of what people sound like at different periods, right? That's called a chronolect!

So, think of it like a time machine that takes us back to a certain time, and we can hear how people spoke then. We can hear how people in the past talked, what words they used, and how they pronounced them. Isn't that cool?

Just like how our clothes or toys have changed over time, our language has also changed in different ways. So, studying chronolects is like studying the changes in our language over time.
