ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Language evolution

Language evolution is how people's way of speaking, writing, and communicating have changed over time. Do you know how you are learning new words and making sentences every day? Just like you, people in the past also learned new words and made sentences differently than how we do it now.

Thousands of years ago, people used gestures, grunts, and simple sounds to communicate with each other. But as they began to settle down and form groups or tribes, they needed to develop a more complex language in order to exchange ideas and information with each other.

Over time, different groups of people developed their own languages that were specific to their region or culture. As these groups interacted with each other, their languages mixed and evolved into new languages altogether.

For example, English evolved from Old English, which was spoken in England in the early Middle Ages. Over time, it changed and became what we speak today. Even now, English is still evolving as new words and phrases are added all the time.

Language evolution is an ongoing process that is influenced by social, cultural, economic, and technological factors. As society changes, so too does language. It is amazing to think about how much language has changed since humans first started communicating, and it will continue to change as we move forward into the future!
