Historical linguistics

Historical Linguistics is the study of language change. It looks at how words, grammar, and pronunciation have changed over time. For example, a historical linguist might look at how English has changed since Old English, or how French and Italian are related. They might look at whether a word came from Latin, German, or somewhere else.
