Circadian clock

The circadian clock is like a fancy watch that lives inside your body. This watch helps you keep track of time and tells you when it’s time to sleep, eat or play. It’s almost like having a little helper robot in your body that keeps you on schedule!

This clock follows a 24-hour cycle, just like the Earth takes 24 hours to make a complete turn. It helps us know when it’s time to wake up in the morning and when it’s time to go to bed at night. This sleep-wake cycle is very important for our health because it helps us feel refreshed and energized for the day.

The circadian clock is controlled by a part of your brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN receives signals from your eyes telling it when it’s day or night outside. It then sends messages to other parts of your body to regulate things like body temperature, hormone production, and metabolism.

When the sun goes down and it starts to get darker outside, your circadian clock tells your body to start producing a hormone called melatonin. This hormone helps you feel sleepy and relaxed, so you can get a good night’s sleep.

But if you disrupt your circadian clock by staying up too late, for example, it can throw off your entire sleep-wake cycle. You might feel groggy during the day or have trouble falling asleep at night. That’s why it’s important to try and stick to a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends and holidays.
