Classical fencing is like the game of pretend sword fighting. It's a special way of fencing that follows certain rules and teaches certain skills. You get to dress up in a special outfit called a fencing uniform and use a special sword called a foil which is a skinny and light sword unlike a real sword which is heavy and sharp.
The idea is to learn how to use the foil to “touch” your opponent at the right time and place, without getting touched yourself. This is called a ‘touch’. If you touch your opponent at the right spot and at the right time, you score a point. If you make enough points, you win! But if you get touched first, you lose.
What makes classical fencing different from other kinds of fencing is how it emphasizes refining your form, technique, and strategy. It's like trying to perfect a dance routine with a sword. Instead of just trying to win, you learn about history of fencing, how to move gracefully, and how to anticipate your opponent's moves. It's a sport that challenges both your body and mind to be sharp!
