ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Clitic climbing

Okay kiddo, let me explain this concept to you as simply as possible. Have you ever heard someone say "I gave it to him" or "She threw it at me"? These little words "to" and "at" are called clitics. They are like little helpers attached to other words in a sentence.

Now, sometimes these little helpers can move to a different part of the sentence. It's kind of like they're climbing up to get a better view! This is called clitic climbing.

Let's use an example. Say we want to say "I'm going to give it to her." Normally, the clitic "to" would just sit right after "give" like this: "I'm going to give it to her." But in some cases, the clitic might move up to the first part of the sentence, like this: "I'm going to her give it to."

Now, why would we do this? Well, sometimes it just sounds better or is easier to understand in certain situations. It's like when you rearrange your toys on the shelf to make them look nicer or fit better.

So that's clitic climbing, in a nutshell! Just remember, those little helpers in your sentences can move around sometimes to make things sound better or clearer.
