A Cloistered Emperor is a type of ruler in Ancient Japan. A Cloistered Emperor was a ruler who gave up their political power, but kept their spiritual power. They would often retreat to a temple and spend their days praying and studying instead of ruling the country. They left the job of ruling the country to other people, like advisors or generals.
