ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coarticulation

Imagine you're trying to say the word "cat." When you say "c" at the beginning, your tongue touches the roof of your mouth. But when you move to the "a" sound in the middle, your tongue moves down a little bit. And when you end with the "t" sound, your tongue moves again to touch the back of your teeth.

Coarticulation is when all these movements happen at the same time! Your tongue doesn't make three separate movements - it moves smoothly from one position to the next. So even though you think you're saying "cat," your mouth is actually doing a lot more work than you realize!

Coarticulation is how our mouths make all the different sounds we need for language. It helps us talk more quickly and smoothly, and it makes the words we say clearer and easier to understand.
