Codec

A codec is a piece of software (or sometimes hardware) that helps to encode and decode data, usually audio or video. Basically, this means that a codec helps to convert audio and video information into a format that can be stored or sent from one device to another and also convert it back into a format that can be heard and seen. For example, if you want to send a video from your phone to your friend's computer, you need a codec to translate the information from your phone into a format that the computer can understand.
