ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coilgun

Imagine a toy train track that goes in a circle. Instead of a train, we're going to use a metal ball. At the bottom of the track, we're going to put a long, skinny coil of wire. When we turn on electricity to the coil, it creates a magnetic field around the coil. This magnetic field pulls the metal ball towards it.

Now let's say we have another coil of wire at the top of the track. When we turn off the electricity to the bottom coil, the ball will keep rolling and eventually roll into the top coil. When we turn on electricity to the top coil, it creates a magnetic field that pushes the ball away from it. This pushes the ball out of the coil and sends it flying through the air.

This is how a coilgun works. Instead of a toy train track, there's a long tube. Inside the tube, there's a series of coils that turn on and off in sequence to accelerate a metal projectile, like a bullet. When the last coil turns off, the projectile flies out of the tube at high speeds. Coilguns can be very powerful and can shoot a projectile faster and farther than a traditional gun.
