Alright kiddo, imagine that you are underwater, deep in the ocean. You start noticing some little bubbles coming up from the ocean floor. These are called cold seeps.
Now, when it comes to the ocean, there are many creatures down there that need to live just like we do. Plants need the sun for energy and animals need food. But how do they get it when they are underwater and far away from the sun? And where do they get their food from?
Well, these creatures get their food from cold seeps. You see, cold seeps are basically cracks in the ocean floor where really cold water and gas ooze out. And the gas that comes out is called methane.
Now, methane might sound like a bad thing, since we hear about it as a greenhouse gas that is harmful to the environment. But underwater, it's actually a good thing. Why is that? Well, the methane that comes out feeds certain kinds of bacteria that live in these cold seeps.
And these bacteria are food for other creatures like clams, mussels, and shrimp which in turn, are food for bigger animals like fish and crabs.
So, even though cold seeps might look like just a few bubbles in the ocean floor, they are actually really important for lots of creatures to survive deep underwater.
