ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chemotroph

Okay, so you know how we need food to give us energy and help us grow big and strong? And you also know how we can get that food from different places, like fruits and vegetables or meat and fish?

Well, just like us, there are tiny living things called bacteria that also need food to survive and grow. But instead of going to the grocery store or picking things off of trees, these bacteria have to find their food in a different way.

That's where being a chemotroph comes in. Chemotrophs are bacteria that get their food by breaking down chemicals, kind of like how we break down food in our bodies to get energy.

But these chemicals that chemotrophs use as food aren't things that we can eat - they're things like sulfur, ammonia, and other substances that are found in places like hot springs or deep in the Earth's crust.

So even though chemotrophs may seem really different from us, they still need food to survive, and they've found a way to get it from the chemicals around them.
