ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Columbia Accident Investigation Board

Okay kiddo, so do you remember the time when mommy's favorite glass cup fell down and broke into many pieces? Yes? So just like that, something very bad happened to a big spaceship called Columbia in the sky on February 1, 2003. Unfortunately, all the people inside the spaceship didn't come back home to earth safely. This made a lot of people very sad and confused.

Now, just like how mommy tried to figure out why her cup broke, a group of very smart people called the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) tried to find out why the spaceship broke and how to make sure it never happens again.

They asked many questions, looked at lots of pictures and videos, and even did some experiments to find clues about what happened on that day. They found out that a piece of foam, like the ones you see in your pillow, hit a really important part of the spaceship called the wing. This made the spaceship break apart and made it hard for it to come back to earth safely.

After lots of research and talking to experts, the CAIB suggested many ways to make spaceships safer and reduce the chances of accidents like the one that happened to Columbia. And because of their hard work, we now have safer spaceships that can take people up to the sky and back down to earth again.
