ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Commitment scheme

Okay, imagine that you and your friend want to play a game where you both pick a number between 1 and 10, and then reveal your choice at the same time. But you both want to make sure the other person doesn't cheat by changing their choice after seeing the other person's number. This is where a commitment scheme comes in!

A commitment scheme is like a secret envelope that you can put your choice in and seal it up without anyone else knowing what's inside. You can show the envelope to your friend to prove that you made your choice, but they can't see inside the envelope. Then, when you both want to reveal your choices, you open the envelope at the same time to show what number you picked.

The commitment scheme makes sure that both you and your friend are committed to your choices and can't change them later. It's a way to keep things fair and honest in a game or any other situation where you need to keep information secret until a certain time.
