ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Common core

Common Core is a set of rules and standards that teachers use to teach you things like math and reading. The people who came up with Common Core wanted everyone to have the same education, no matter where they live in the United States. That way, you could move to a new school or state and still be learning the same things as your old school.

For example, in math, Common Core wants you to learn how to solve problems by understanding why the problem works, instead of just memorizing the answer. In reading, Common Core wants you to learn how to understand what you read, and be able to explain it to someone else.

Teachers use Common Core to make sure they are teaching you the same things as other teachers, but they can still use their own style to teach you. That means your teacher might teach things a little bit differently than your friend's teacher, but you will both learn the same thing in the end.
