Let's say you and your friend both got a score on a test. To compare your scores, you need to find the average, or mean, of your scores. You add up all the points you got and divide by the number of questions on the test.
Now, let's say you want to compare your average score with your friend's average score. To do that, you need to find the mean of their scores too.
Once you have both means, you can compare them to see who did better on the test. If your mean is higher than your friend's mean, that means you did better.
This is basically what comparing means means - you're finding the average of a set of numbers and comparing it with the average of another set of numbers to see which is greater.
