Okay kiddo, so let's say you have a picture of your favorite superhero on your computer. But, the picture is really big and takes up a lot of space. It takes so long to load and make the picture blurry. So, what you can do is compress the picture. This makes it smaller and easier to load, but sometimes it can change the picture too. This change is called a "compression artifact".
A compression artifact is like when you squish a play dough ball really hard. Sometimes it can change the shape or colors of the play dough. Similarly in a compressed picture, the colors or shapes of the picture can get distorted because of the compression. This can make the picture look pixelated or have blurry lines.
So when we use compression, we have to be careful and make sure the picture still looks good and not too blurry or distorted. We don't want our superhero to look like they're made of squares!
