Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris (CNEP) was a French bank that started operating a long time ago, when our grandparents were just babies. It was founded in 1848 by some very smart people who wanted to help businesses and individuals who needed money to grow and develop.
Imagine a piggy bank where you put your allowance. Now imagine you are an adult and you want to start a business, but you don't have enough money to buy all the things you need. That's where CNEP would come in! They would give you some money you're not allowed to touch, but with the condition that you pay them back with a little extra after some time. This little extra is called interest, and it's like a thank you for letting you borrow the money.
CNEP was very good at helping people and businesses like that, and over time they grew bigger and bigger, just like how you grow bigger and taller as you eat your veggies. CNEP became one of the most important banks in France, and people who wanted to borrow money would often go to them.
But like all things, CNEP eventually had some problems. Just like how you might make mistakes when you're learning or growing up, CNEP made some bad decisions when they were trying to help people. This led to some people not being able to pay back the money they had borrowed, and CNEP didn't have enough money for everyone. It's like if you had shared your allowance with too many friends and then didn't have any left for yourself!
Eventually, CNEP had to close its doors and stop operating in the year 1966. But even though it's not around anymore, it's still important to remember the good things that it once did, just like how it's important to remember all the things your grandparents or great-grandparents did that helped you and your family.
