ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Confessional state

A confessional state is like a big group of friends who all have the same beliefs and follow the same religion. It's like they all have a secret that they share and they trust each other to keep it safe. When a whole country is a confessional state, it means that the government and the people all follow one religion and work together to make sure everyone agrees with it.

In a confessional state, everyone has to follow the same religious rules and beliefs. This means that there might be laws or rules that the government makes that are based on this religion. For example, if the confessional state is a Christian one, then laws might be made based on the Bible, like not being allowed to get divorced or banning gay marriage.

Being a confessional state can be good because everyone works together and believes in the same things. But it can also be bad because people who do not believe in the same religion might be left out or treated unfairly because they do not follow the same rules. So it's important for everyone to respect each other's beliefs, even if they don't always agree.
