ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Consonant harmony

Consonant harmony is when certain sounds, called consonants, like to be friends and hang out with other consonants that sound similar. It's like how you might like playing with certain friends who enjoy the same games as you.

For example, some words in certain languages sound better when they have only certain consonants together. In Turkish, words that end with the letter "k" sound better with words that start with the letters "p," "ç," or "t." These letters all make similar sounds when you say them, so they are consonant friends and like to be together in words.

Another example is in Hungarian, where words that end with the letter "g" sound better with words that start with the letters "b" or "p." These letters also make similar sounds, so they are consonant friends and like to be together in words.

It's like when you and your friends all like the same pizza toppings, so when you order pizza, you make sure to get all the toppings that everyone likes. In the same way, when people speak these languages, they try to use words with consonant combinations that sound pleasing to the ear.
