Consumer socialisation is the way we learn how to buy and use things in our society. Just like when we learn how to talk, walk, or share, we also learn how to shop and what to buy. We learn this from different sources around us such as our parents, friends, and media.
For example, if we see our parents always buying a certain brand of cereal, we might think that brand is the best and always choose it ourselves. Or, if our friends are all wearing a certain type of shoe, we might feel like we need to wear that same shoe in order to fit in. We also learn from commercials and ads on TV, billboards, and social media.
Consumer socialisation can influence what we think is important, what our values are, and even our identity. It can be good to learn how to make smart choices when buying things, but we also have to be careful not to be influenced too much by outside sources and make decisions based on our own thoughts and feelings.
