ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Control volume

Okay kiddo, imagine you are playing in your sandbox and you have a toy bucket with sand inside it. Now, let's pretend the bucket is like a control volume. A control volume is an imaginary space around an object or a group of objects where we can control and observe how things are changing inside it.

So, when you pour water over the sand in the bucket, you can see how the sand moves and changes shape. This is because the sand and water are interacting inside the control volume, which is your toy bucket.

Scientists and engineers use control volumes to study how things change and interact in different systems. They might use computer simulations to create a virtual control volume and then monitor how things like air, water, or heat flow through it.

Control volumes are useful because they allow us to measure and calculate things like mass, energy, and momentum. For example, if we want to know how much heat is being generated in a car engine, we can create a control volume around the engine and measure the temperature changes inside it.

Overall, control volumes are a helpful tool for understanding how different systems work and how different components interact with each other.
