ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coordinate line

Imagine a piece of paper with a big plus sign drawn in the center. The horizontal line is called the x-axis and the vertical line is called the y-axis. These two lines create a grid that divides the paper into smaller squares. Each square has a coordinate, which is a fancy way of saying a specific location on the grid.

The coordinates are written as pairs of numbers, like (2, 3) or (-5, 6). The first number in the pair represents the position on the x-axis, and the second number represents the position on the y-axis.

So, a coordinate line is just a line that runs along one of the axes on the paper. If someone tells you to plot a point on the x-axis at 3, it means you need to imagine the line running horizontally across the paper and find the square that has a coordinate of (3, 0) – because it's at 3 on the x-axis and 0 on the y-axis.

Coordinate lines help us locate points on a grid and can be used in math to solve problems, graph functions, or plot data.
