Corduroy road

A corduroy road is a type of road that is made up of logs laid side by side. Imagine taking some pieces of wood and placing them next to each other on the ground like a puzzle. This is what a corduroy road looks like.

These roads are called corduroy roads because the logs look like the ridges on a corduroy fabric. They were mostly used in the past when there were no paved roads and people had to build roads on rough terrain like swamps, marshes, or muddy areas.

Corduroy roads were not easy to build, but they allowed wagons and horses to travel across places that were otherwise inaccessible. The logs were usually cut from nearby forests and laid down in a row. Sometimes, the logs were arranged to create a flat surface, while at other times they were placed diagonally to make the road more stable.

Corduroy roads were bumpy and noisy, and they often required repairs because the wood would rot over time. Modern roads are made from materials like concrete and asphalt that are much smoother and last longer. But corduroy roads were an important invention for people at a time when transportation was difficult, and they helped to connect people and places that would otherwise be isolated.
