ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coronach

Coronach is a Gaelic word that means "lament for the dead" or "funeral song". It's a type of song that people used to sing in Ireland and Scotland when they were mourning someone who had died.

Imagine that your best friend, Teddy, passed away. You're very sad and you can't stop thinking about all the fun things you used to do together. You also feel like you want to do something special to say goodbye to Teddy.

In the past, people used to sing coronachs to express their feelings of sadness and to honor the person who had passed away.

Coronachs can be slow and sad or fast and intense, depending on the emotion of the singer. They can be sung with or without instruments, and sometimes people would even use animals like cows or goats to make mournful sounds that added to the music.

Even though people don't sing coronachs as much anymore, sometimes you can still hear them at traditional Irish or Scottish funerals. They're a special way to remember the people we love who have passed away.
