ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Correlation does not imply causation

Correlation and causation are different things. Correlation means that two things seem to be related in some way. But correlation doesn't tell us why the two things are related. Just because two things seem related doesn't mean one caused the other.

For example, let's say we notice that when it snows in the winter, ice cream sales go up. This means there is a correlation between the two things. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the snow is causing people to buy ice cream. Maybe people are just buying more ice cream when it's cold outside, regardless of whether or not it's snowing!

In other words, just because two things seem related to each other, it doesn't mean one caused the other. We need to look deeper to understand the relationship between two things.
