Counter-melody

Imagine you are at a party and there are two people singing. One person is singing the main song, while the other person is singing a different tune that goes along with it. This second tune is called the counter-melody.

A counter-melody is basically a different melody that is played or sung at the same time as the main melody. It goes along with the main melody to make the music more interesting and beautiful.

Think of it like coloring in a picture. The main melody is the outline of the picture, and the counter-melody is like coloring in the different parts to make it look more colorful and complete.

So just like how two party guests can sing two different parts of a song together, musicians often play different melodies at the same time to make beautiful music. And the second melody is called a counter-melody.
