A crab trap is a special tool that people use to catch crabs in the ocean. It's like a cage that's made out of metal wire or nylon mesh. The trap has a few different parts:
- The entrance: this is the part where the crabs swim into the trap. It's usually funnel-shaped, which means it gets narrower as the crabs swim inside.
- The bait box: this is where people put food to attract the crabs. Often, people use things like raw fish, chicken, or squid to lure the crabs inside.
- The holding chamber: this is the main part of the trap where the crabs are kept once they've been caught. There are usually many small openings on the sides of the trap so that water can flow through and keep the crabs alive until the trap is pulled up to the surface.
Once the trap has been set in the water, it usually takes a few hours for the crabs to find the bait and swim inside the trap. The trap is attached to a rope that leads up to a buoy on the surface. When it's time to check the trap, the person fishing for crabs will grab the buoy and pull up the rope to retrieve the trap.
If there are crabs inside the trap, the person will take them out and put them in a bucket or cooler to keep them fresh until they're ready to be cooked and eaten. If there are no crabs inside the trap, the person will just add more bait and let the trap sit in the water for a little longer.
