ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crackpot index

Okay kiddo, imagine you're in school and you have to write an essay. You have to make sure your essay has all the right things in it, like good grammar, correct spelling, and things that make sense.

Now, imagine that there are people who also write essays but they don't care about those things. They just write whatever they want, even if it doesn't make sense and has lots of mistakes. We call those people "crackpots".

The "crackpot index" is a way for people to measure how much of a crackpot someone is based on how many mistakes and nonsense things they write. It's like a scorecard that puts all the mistakes and nonsense things in different categories and adds them up.

The more nonsense and mistakes a person has in their writing, the higher their crackpot index score will be. So, the crackpot index helps people make fun of crackpots and not take them seriously, because their ideas are usually not based in reality or supported by evidence.
