ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Craniofacial Fellowship

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a dentist? Maybe you went there to get your teeth checked or to get a tooth pulled out. Dentists are really good at taking care of our teeth, but did you know that there are some people who specialize in taking care of our faces and skulls? They are called craniofacial surgeons and they do a very special kind of surgery.

A craniofacial fellowship is like going to school to become a super-specialist in this kind of surgery. But before someone can do a fellowship, they have to go to regular school (university) and study medicine first. This takes many years and they will learn all about the human body, how it works, and how to fix it when it’s broken.

After they finish regular school, they can apply to become a fellow in craniofacial surgery. If they are accepted, they will spend a few extra years learning even more about how to fix faces and skulls. They will work in a hospital and learn how to help people who were born with problems in their faces or skulls or had accidents that hurt their faces or skulls.

Craniofacial surgeons are like superheroes, because they can help people who might not be able to eat, breathe or see because of the way their face or skull is formed. They make the kids feel better and give them more confidence. So, if you ever meet a craniofacial surgeon, be sure to thank them for using their powers for good!
