ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cratylism

Cratylism is just a fancy word for the idea that words have a special meaning because of the sounds they make. This means that the way that a word sounds can help us understand what it means. For example, if we hear the word "buzz" it might make us think of a bee because it sounds like the buzzing of their wings.

Some people believe that this is really important and that the sounds of words can even have a magical power over us. They might say that words that sound harsh can make us feel angry, while words that sound gentle can make us feel calm.

However, not everyone agrees with this idea. Some people think that words only have meaning because we all agree on what they mean, and that the sounds they make are just a coincidence. It's up to you to decide which side you agree with!
