Imagine if you had a bunch of different types of toys, like blocks, puzzles, stuffed animals, and toy cars. Sometimes, you might play with just one toy, like building a big tower with your blocks. Other times, you might mix different toys together, like putting your stuffed animals in the toy cars and having a race. When you mix different types of toys like this, you're doing something called "cross-genre play".
In music, "cross-genre" means combining different types of music together. Just like how you mix different toys, musicians might take parts of one type of music (like jazz) and mix it with another type (like hip-hop). When they do this, they create a new type of music that has some parts from each of the original types.
For example, imagine a musician who likes both rock music and rap music. They might create a new song that starts with a hard guitar riff like in rock music, but then switch to a rap verse with beats like in hip-hop. This song would be an example of cross-genre music!
