ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crusaders

Imagine that a long, long time ago, people who believed in Christianity lived in a land called Europe. They believed in a man named Jesus who they thought was the son of God. These people wanted to visit a special place called Jerusalem, which they believed to be a very sacred city related to their religion. However, this holy city was very far away and was under the control of a different group of people who believed in a different religion called Islam.

So, the people from Europe decided that they wanted to take back control of Jerusalem from the Islamic people. They formed a group of warriors called Crusaders, who had swords, shields and armor to protect themselves while fighting. The Crusaders went on a long journey to get to Jerusalem, and along the way, they fought many battles against the Muslims who were also fighting to protect their land.

The Crusades, as these battles were called, went on for many years, and many people died in them. Some of the Crusaders succeeded in taking back Jerusalem and other important cities in the Middle East, but some of them failed. Even though they won some battles, they also did some bad things, like killing innocent people who didn't do anything wrong. In the end, the Crusades changed many things in Europe and the Middle East, both good and bad, and they are still remembered as a very important part of history.
