ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Curbside collection

Curbside collection is when the garbage truck comes to pick up the trash and recycling from the curb in front of your house. It's like magic, but instead of just disappearing, the garbage and recycling go on a big adventure.

First, the garbage truck drives to your house and stops in front of the curb. The garbage collector gets out and uses a special tool to pick up the garbage and recycling bins and dumps the contents into the truck.

Then, the truck goes to other houses and picks up their garbage and recycling too. When the truck is full, it drives to a special place called a landfill or recycling center where the garbage and recycling are sorted and processed.

The garbage is piled up in the landfill, which is like a big hole in the ground. Over time, the garbage breaks down and turns into dirt. Some of the garbage releases gases that can be turned into energy to power homes and businesses!

The recycling is sorted at the recycling center and sent to factories where it is turned into new things. For example, recycled plastic bottles can be turned into fleece jackets or recycled paper can be made into new notebooks.

All of this happens because of curbside collection, so it's important to put your garbage and recycling out on the curb at the right time on trash day. And remember, reduce, reuse, and recycle whenever you can to help keep our planet clean and healthy!
