History of waste management

Hey kiddo! Let me tell you a story about the history of waste management. Back in the old days, people just threw their trash wherever they wanted! Can you imagine that? But as cities grew bigger, the trash started to become a big problem. It smelled bad, attracted bugs and rats, and made people sick.

So, people started to figure out ways to get rid of their trash. They made big holes in the ground and threw their trash in there. They called them landfills. But these landfills were stinky and unhealthy. People needed a better solution.

In the late 1800s, cities started to hire people to clean the streets and collect the trash. They would take the garbage to the outskirts of the city and burn it. But burning trash was also not great for the environment. So, people started to look for other ways to handle garbage.

In the mid-1900s, people started to recycle more. They realized that some things could be reused instead of just being thrown away. They also started to use new technology to help get rid of the trash in a cleaner way. They made incinerators that could burn the trash but without causing as much pollution.

Today, we have even more ways to deal with garbage. We still have landfills and incinerators, but we also have recycling programs where we sort the trash and reuse things like paper, plastics, and metal. We also have composting where we turn food scraps into fertilizer for plants.

So, you see, waste management has evolved a lot over time, from just throwing garbage in the street to finding cleaner and more sustainable ways to deal with it. It's important to take care of our environment and that includes handling our trash responsibly.
