Cut-off low

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a spinning top? You twirl it around and around, and it spins fast. Well, imagine a spinning top in the sky! That's what we call a low pressure system. It's an area where the air is moving in a circle, kind of like a mini hurricane but without the wind and rain.

Now, a cut-off low is like a spinning top that's been knocked off its course. It's still spinning, but it's not moving very far. It's stuck in one place in the sky, like it's been cut off from the rest of the weather patterns. And because it's stuck, it can sit in one place for a long time, sometimes for days or even weeks.

When a cut-off low gets stuck over a particular area, it can cause a lot of different weather conditions. It can make it rain or storm for a long time, or it can make it really hot or really cold for a long time too. That's because it's not moving away and taking its weather with it like a normal low pressure system.

So, when you hear people talking about a cut-off low, they're just talking about a spinning top in the sky that's stuck in one place and causing some funky weather!
