ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

DNA damage (naturally occurring)

DNA damage is a natural part of life - it happens when our bodies make mistakes when copying or repairing our DNA (the instructions in our cells that tell our bodies how to work). Our bodies are constantly making copies of our DNA and repairing any damage, but even when they do their best some damage still gets through. This damage can be caused by things like too much sun, smoking, or even just normal wear and tear from everyday life. This damage can lead to changes in our DNA that can make us sick or cause cancer. We can't stop this damage from happening, but we can take steps to try and minimize our risk, like wearing sunscreen and avoiding smoking.
